held at Edwardwoods Community
Centre, west London on 22 May 2004 .
As Mariam Deari is celebrated all over
the world in May & June, this year's
London celebration was unique, extra
ordinary, melodramatic and stylish
festival. Traditions of Mariam

Firstly, the organisation, people's involvement,
the preparations, the food and the whole
atmosphere was excellent. There was a huge
number of participation. We have even
witnessed people from the mainland Europe .
Eritreans from all walks of life were there. So
many prominent members of the community
were there. It was in deed, a national festival.
Mass was held on the following day, Sunday.

Nothing is like seeing mothers and
sisters in their utmost form though.
They were all splendid with their
traditional clothes, hair plaiting (gdla),
and their natural beauty. Overwhelming
sense of excitement and emotions hit
the roof when Mihret held her
microphone and sang. People poured
onto the floor and danced.
Medhanie playing his keyboard accompanied
by Kalete Raki and Henok Tesfalidet played
the sensational fumfum (harmonica) tune
and with the rhythm, everyone went loose.
Dancing (seseet) took over and reminded
many of ours years of youth. Although on a
wood floor, it seemed as if it was on the river
course of Deari.
